Hey guys!
I’m almost finished the first draft of The Terrible Twos and it’s been a really exciting experience. It’s my first time writing a nonfiction novel, so the approach to writing has been totally different from my classic fiction writing approach.
Once I was 5 or 6 chapters in, I realized a hilarious trend developing. As I worked through the perception shifts and gave examples, every single chapter had a food reference. Those who know me personally are probably not super surprised by this discovery.
Guys, it wasn’t even INTENTIONAL. I just love food that much.
Once I discovered this, I just started having fun with it. This book is all about breaking rules and going outside of the norms, so I may as well have fun and refer to food if I want to, right?
Here are some of my favourite references so far:
“If you’re struggling, you’re trying. And if you’re trying, you’re on your way to success. You can’t expect to simply grab that fork and eat an entire cake in one sitting without putting some serious effort in, right? It takes more than determination and a fork. It’s going to take grit, napkins, and a whole lotta milk.”
“Think about it like when you treat yourself to a frozen pizza because you deserve it. It’s been a long, hard day and you really want to enjoy something special to celebrate that the day is over. You pop it in the oven, follow the instructions, and in 20 minutes, you have a beautiful pizza sitting on your plate. It smells cheesy and garlicky and it’s been driving you crazy as you’ve been waiting for it to finish.”
“An improperly-stacked queue is going to be like an uncooperative salad bowl. You’ve got all of the different ingredients (which would be the projects, in our example). They’re all in the bowl, but they aren’t really doing much to help you out. The croutons have gotten soggy and are all clumped over in the corner. The greens are getting bonded together instead of mixing with the peppers and the onions.”
“It’s sort of like if you eat the same thing every meal, each day of the week, all month, every month of the year. Even if it’s your favourite meal and you are certain you’ll always find it energizing and satisfying, you’ll start to find that fades after day 64. By the time you get to day 178, it’s almost gag-worthy. So, by the time you get to day 365, you’re probably writing death threats.”
I have found my calling
Excuse me while I go and find a way add food references into every single thing I write about in the future.
Seriously, though, this is going to be an entertaining and slightly embarassing feature that may just help this appeal to more readers! I guess that’s what happens when a hard-core foodie decides to write a self-help book!
Your time is coming
I’ll be getting to the editing process pretty soon and, from there, I’ll be looking for advance readers! Keep an eye out for another update from me where I post more information on that, if you’re interested!

Great to read about your writing progress. Looking forward to reading the book. The food analogies are a clever motif.
